Gender Identity Measurement In Early School Aged Children
The goal of this study is to learn more about how children (ages 5-8 years) describe their gender identities. We are also interested in learning more about the ways children think and develop. We will be giving children several tasks designed as games to assess flexibility in thinking, creativity, and the ability to take another person’s perspective.

Dynamic Effects in Peripheral Auditory Processing
The purpose of this study is to learn more about the origin of tinnitus (phantom sound) and how age and hearing loss affect the ability to hear simple and complex sounds, such as tones and speech, presented in isolation and in the presence of other competing sounds. Possible participants may have normal hearing or mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Participants will be seated in a sound-treated room and listen to sounds over headphones, insert earphones (earbuds), or via loudspeakers. The tasks involve making judgments about the sounds, such as discriminating which of two sounds appeared to fluctuate in intensity or reporting the words in a sentence.

Neural Correlates of Goal Prioritization and Conscientiousness
This research will use neuroimaging to study the brain systems involved in prioritizing goals effectively, as well as testing whether variation in those systems is associated with the personality trait conscientiousness, which reflects organization, self-discipline, and industriousness and predicts important health and other life outcomes.

Brain Training for Substance Use Disorders
Participants play games designed to train visual attention towards natural, non-drug-related scenarios. A biofeedback loop between gameplay and an electroencephalogram (EEG) system monitors game performance and guides game difficulty.

• admitted to Fairview's Lodging Plus program for chemical dependency treatment with opioid use being the primary reason
• able to read at a minimum of a 6th grade reading level

Registry Study of Childhood Cancer in Minnesota
The aim of this study is to obtain newborn blood spots (NBS) and tumor specimens for children and adolescents diagnosed with malignant neoplasms.

The Lung Cell Study (TLC)
The purpose of our research study is to increase our understanding on the human lung immune response to infection. We aim to use this knowledge to develop novel approaches on the prevention and treatment of lung infections. To accomplish this, we plan to obtain cells from the airways and blood of healthy volunteers to perform immune experiments.
• healthy volunteers without systemic or respiratory disease
• non-smokers or former smokers who quit more than 6 months ago (including marijuana)
• ages 18-50
• preferred but not required: have lived in countries in Africa, Latino America or South East Asia
• preferred but not required: history of positive tuberculosis (TB) skin or blood test
• recent illness, bleeding disorders, or a history of heart, lung, or systemic disease
• weakened immune system or use of immunosuppressant medication
• use of inhaled substances in the past six months or history of heavy smoking
• allergy or prior adverse reaction to lidocaine, midazolam, or fentanyl

Assessments of sound perception and brain activation in response to paired sound and electrical stimulation of surface ear regions
We are investigating how paired non-invasive electrical stimulation of surface body regions and sound changes sound perception and tinnitus. Body stimulation regions include: external ear/behind the ear, shoulder, neck, forearm, hand, and upper arm. We aim to better understand the optimal conditions of this paired stimulation, which opens opportunities for applying this method to improving hearing loss or tinnitus. We are studying three groups of people: those with normal hearing, those with mild to moderate hearing loss, and those with tinnitus.

Characterization of spleen motion and anatomy using imaging and sensors
This research is being performed to examine how the spleen moves during breathing in various body positions and breathing conditions. Physical measurements of the participant's body will be recorded (weight, height, and body dimensions) and then noninvasive recordings of the spleen and breathing patterns will be recorded. The spleen motion will be measured using standard abdominal ultrasound imaging, and breathing will be measured with accelerometers (small devices about the size of a quarter that measure the movement of the chest during breathing).

• people with breathing difficulties and/or individuals for whom short breath holds and modification of breathing patterns is difficult or uncomfortable

Testing the feasibility of a clinic-based assessment of exercise-induced maximum heart rate and heart rate recovery in adults without cardiovascular disease
We want to explore whether it is possible for adults without symptoms of heart disease to perform a short, high intensity exercise routine in a clinic setting in order to measure maximum heart rate and heart rate recovery. If this method is successful, it could be used by patients and clinicians to estimate and track heart health over time.

Cochlear Implantation in Children with Asymmetric Hearing Loss or Single-Sided Deafness Clinical Trial
• ages 4 to 14 and 11 months old
• parents and child fluent in English
• parents desire functional hearing in both ears for their child
• severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing in the other ear
• if older than 5 years, documentation of progressive hearing loss (i.e. passed newborn hearing screening, or significant change in hearing)

Dissecting the role of acetaldehyde in oral carcinogenesis
The goal of this study is to better understand how drinking alcohol may lead to oral cancers. Acetaldehyde, a chemical formed when the body breaks down alcohol, is believed to play an important role. This study will measure acetaldehyde and DNA damage levels in the mouth of participants after a low dose of alcohol. The levels will be compared between three groups, all having different degrees of risk for developing oral cancer, and with non-drinkers to identify DNA damage that might be important to cancer formation. We also want to understand how alcohol can affect the bacteria in our mouths and how that might impact oral DNA damage.
• Alcohol drinkers of Eastern Asian descent who experiences flushing (reddening or warming of face) when drinking {ages 21 - 45}
• Alcohol drinkers who have Fanconi Anemia {ages 21+}

The goal of this study is to learn more about how people make health-related decisions. Participants will complete two remote visits over Zoom, and answer questions about their beliefs, experiences, and health decisions they have made. They will also complete online computerized tasks. Total participation time is 2-3 hours.

Development of objective measures for multisensory effects on hearing
Paired sound and electrical stimulation can alter how the brain encodes sounds and the perception of sounds, as shown in emerging evidence from animal studies. The aim of this study is to develop measures for paired stimulation that can be used reliably. These measures assess the following aspects of hearing: basic hearing sensitivity and cochlear health, perception of loudness and pitch, and perception of speech and music/complex sounds. This will lead to a greater understanding in the hearing science community about how multisensory stimulation can alter activity in the auditory system and sound perception, which may lead to new techniques for improving hearing disorders.

Project SHINE (Sleep Health INitiative for Equity): Culturally informing a sleep extension intervention for African American adults
The purpose of the study is to better understand the experiences of healthy lifestyle behaviors (i.e., sleep and physical activity), and receive feedback on a sleep intervention that aims to improve sleep among African American adults who do not get enough sleep. Sleep is vital to engaging in a healthy lifestyle, living longer, and feeling energized throughout the day. This research will compare a sleep intervention program (“Sleep Intervention Group”) to a healthy homes education program (“Control Group”) to see if there are changes in sleep and physical activity among those in the Sleep Intervention Group. We expect that participants will be in this research study for about 6 weeks.

NAPS2: North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy Consortium Stage 2
We are recruiting only healthy participants who do not have REM sleep behavior disorder. The information gained from this study will help the investigators understand more about REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and the possible underlying neurologic disorders that can cause RBD.

Kinematic signatures of postural instability and gait in Parkinson Disease
The purpose of this research is to better understand balance and walking in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. This research study uses small wearable devices that attach to clothing and can measure the body’s location while performing walking and balance tests.
• People diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, with or without implanted Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS). May be at any age of disease progression.
• Healthy adults of similar age to participants who have Parkinson's Disease and are enrolled in the study.

The purpose of this study is to describe current knowledge and opinions about anal cancer screening among men who have sex with men (MSM), as well as their experience receiving guideline-compliant care aimed at anal cancer risk reduction using a large-scale survey disseminated via social media.

Identification of Prodromal Neurodegeneration in Serotonergic-Induced REM sleep Behavior Disorder
This research is being completed to examine the cells, brain imaging, and speech in individuals with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder who are taking serotonergic medications such as Citalopram, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine and Sertraline. The purpose of examining these is to try and see if we can predict signs of Dementia with Lewy bodies (a progressive form of dementia with an increase in decline of thinking, reasoning, and other functions). This may benefit others by enabling us to diagnose Dementia with Lewy Bodies sooner rather than later.
• 18 to 75 years old
• diagnosis of polysomnogram-confirmed RBD (e.g. narcolepsy) with history of dream enactment or clear dream enactment visualized on video from polysomnogram
• dream enactment began shortly after (less than 2 months) starting a serotonergic antidepressant medication
• for Healthy Volunteers: on serotonergic medication for at least 6 months without history of dream enactment
• the following serotonergic medications are included for both groups: Citalopram, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, and Sertraline
• Parkinsons disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Multiple System Atrophy, Pure Autonomic Failure, Alzheimers disease, other diagnosed neurodegenerative disorder, or other known cause of RBD (e.g. narcolepsy)
• untreated obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation, central sleep apnea or other sleep disordered breathing
• unable to have a MRI scan
• women who are pregnant
• for Healthy Volunteers: same exclusion criteria as those with 5-HT RBD group, plus history of dream enactment, or increased REM motor tone
The TrialNet Natural History Study of the Development of Type 1 Diabetes
TrialNet is an international research group dedicated to the study, prevention, and early treatment of Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is now understood as a disease that develops over time in stages. Stage 1 starts with the appearance of having two or more autoantibodies. This is followed by Stage 2, which is the development of abnormal blood glucose levels. Stage 3 is the clinical diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. This study will help us learn more about how Type 1 diabetes occurs through the screening of diabetes-related autoantibodies and monitoring individuals who have tested positive for these autoantibodies.
• 2.5 to 45 years old and have an immediate family member with type 1 diabetes (child, parent, or sibling)
• 2.5 to 20 years old who have an extended family member with type 1 diabetes (cousin, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or half-sibling)
• already have diabetes
• history of being treated with insulin or oral diabetes medications
• using systemic immunosuppressive agents (topical and inhaled agents are acceptable)
• have any known serious diseases

The purpose of this Health Participant Registry is to collect the names, contact information and answers to safety screening questions that assist in the determination of magnetic resonance (MR) compatibility of individuals who have expressed interest in MR research.

Tissue biopsies for the study of FSHD
A single visit study with muscle and/or skin biopsy / blood draw, performed to determine whether a molecular or cellular defect can be attributed to cells of Fascioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) muscle. This study is recruiting both individuals with genetically confirmed FSHD as well as unaffected healthy (control) individuals.
• Genetic confirmation of Fascioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD)
• at least 4 years old
• Healthy Family Members: parent or sibling of someone who has FSHD
• heart failure, respiratory insufficiency that requires respiratory support
• taking anticoagulants or anti platelet medications (aspirin or NSAIDs)
Building Resilience in Adrenoleukodystrophy with Imaging and Neuropsychology (BRAIN)
This study is about a genetic condition called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The first goal of this study is to understand more about how ALD affects a child’s brain and development in childhood as they take part in medical care and monitoring. This is important to identify the optimal ways to detect and treat manifestations of ALD such as cerebral ALD. The second goal is to learn about how ALD affects caregivers, so that clinicians can offer better support to families in the future. We will also have healthy comparisons to help to learn more about the condition (ALD) being studied, by comparing the information collected to a child without the condition.
• 3 to 15 years old
• male
• diagnosis of ALD either at-risk for ALD: patients with genetically or biochemically-diagnosed ALD who currently have no evidence of cerebral disease on MRI and b) Cerebral ALD: boys with the cerebral form of ALD who underwent or are undergoing evaluation or treatment for this condition and have early stage disease
• for healthy volunteers: males between 3 and 15 years old
• girls are excluded because this is a genetic disease that only males get
• history of a genetic, neurological, or neurodevelopmental disorder affecting brain development
• history of significant brain insult, infection or injury
Fully Automated Motion-corrected MR Spectroscopy in Human Brain and Spinal Cord
The goal of this proposal is to develop fully automated, high performance, motion-corrected MRS sequences for the brain and spinal cord, that are also easy to share (no additional external hardware needed) with other institutions and easy to use.
• Participants who cannot have an MRI, as determined by the CMRR safety screening form (e.g. metal implant)
• Pregnancy
• Claustrophobia
• Inability or unwillingness to complete an MRI because of low cognitive function or behavioral dysregulation
• Diabetes that has been diagnosed within the past 3 months (diabetes is OK if it is stably controlled (per participant report of either HbA1c <7.0 or stable control for at least 3 months))
• Hearing loss sufficient to prevent communication via telephone
• Weight > 250 and BMI > 35.
• Uncontrolled high blood pressure (>170/100) or working with doctor to stabilize blood pressure
• Severe lung, liver, kidney or heart disease of other major organ failure.

Brain Connectivity Patterns in Chronic Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
We are studying brain mechanisms related to chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. We are looking at brain structural and functional characteristics that can potentially explain why some people experience persistent pain in their jaws for months or years. We will compare this to information we get from people who do not experience TMD pain. We expect that this new knowledge will improve our understanding of this chronic pain condition and help us develop better treatments.
• Female participants only (biological sex)

• Chronic jaw pain ( > 3 months)
• Certain medical conditions (examples: heart disease, diabetes, autism, trigeminal neuralgia)

HEALthy Brain and Child Development Study
We are doing a study to learn how children develop early in life. There will be about 300 parent-child pairs in this study in Minnesota and about 7,500 pairs total across the country. There will be study visits from pregnancy through the first 10 years of your child’s life.

Neurobiological and Psychological Maintenance Mechanisms Associated with Anticipatory Rewards in Bulimia Nervosa
The purpose of this investigation is to identify the potentially crucial role of anticipatory reward mechanisms maintaining bulimic behavior (i.e., binge eating and purging) in bulimia nervosa (BN).
• ages 18 to 55 years
• right handed
• able to read and speak English
• at least one bulimic episode and one self-induced vomiting episode per week for at least three months
• stable dose (for at least 6 weeks) in medication that affects mood, appetite, or weight
• For Healthy Participants: right handed, speak and read English, no history of eating disorder
• history of gastric bypass
• current medical or psychiatric illness instability (e.g. hospitalization in past 3 months
• history of psychosis or bipolar disorder
• current substance use disorder

Wearable sensors for the combined use of early detection of postural instability and fall risk prediction in Parkinson s disease patients
Balance and walking problems in patients with Parkinson’s Disease do not respond well to the typical medication or surgical treatments. This research study uses five small wearable devices that attach to clothing and can measure the body’s location while performing walking tests, balance tests, and normal daily activities. By comparing patients with Parkinson’s Disease to people of similar age without Parkinson’s Disease, we hope to learn important differences relevant to the walking and balance problems in Parkinson’s Disease
• Anyone who has been diagnosed with parkinsonism including Parkinsons disease, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, or atypical parkinsonism
• Healthy adults of similar age as study participants
• people who have dementia of sufficient severity to impair their ability to make health-care decisions for themselves
Maternal probiotic supplementation for improved neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs)
The purpose of this study is to see whether providing pregnant women with probiotics during their pregnancy is associated with infant gut microbiome variation and improved neurodevelopmental outcomes. We expect that you and your child will be in this research study for approximately 8 months from the time you sign the consent from to the completion of your 6-month visit with your infant.
• pregnant women in their second or third trimester with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes
• screening for gestational diabetes involves a 2-step (screening test followed by a diagnostic test) with screening done between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation in a non-fasting state. If the screening threshold is met or exceeded, patients receive a oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
• BMI 18.5-45 kg/m2 at first prenatal visit
• age 21-45 at time of delivery
• pregnant women who report during enrollment procedures that they have social support for and intention to exclusively breastfeed for at least 3 months (breastfeeding intentions are known to be correlated with actual behavior)

Neural Bases of Disgust Conditioning in Anorexia Nervosa
We are studying the brain patterns of people who have anorexia nervosa and those who don't have anorexia nervosa. We will look at MRIs, behavioral measures, and questionnaires to see if we can identify the brain activity associated with disgust. There will be a follow-up at 6 and 12 months.
• Anorexia Nervosa Participants: females between 18- 50 years old who meet criteria for diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa
• Healthy Participants: healthy females age between 18-50, no previous diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa or other psychiatric disease.
• Meets criteria for substance abuse disorder or actively suicidal
• Neurological condition or other developmental disorder
• MRI contraindication
• Inability to read English
